Penelope watched him. She watched the way his hands moved, cupping water and sluicing it over his face and hands. She watched, with far more intent than was proper, when he removed shaving tools from his bag and began to scrape the day’s growth of whiskers from his skin. It was fascinating. It was also a reminder she did not need of just how different they were physically.

Thinking of Charlotte’s machinations, miserable as it was, was also safe. She knew that. She understood it, to a degree. What was happening between herself and her —what would happen between them—was beyond her ken. Perhaps that was why she’d allowed such negative thoughts to invade her mind; they were familiar and, to a degree, safe.

When he’d finished his ablutions, she asked a question that surprised her. “Why did you shave? I thought most gentlemen shaved in the mornings.”

He walked toward her, reached for her hand and, once it was in his, turned it over so that the sleeve of her wrapper fell back, revealing the delicate skin at the inside of her wrist. “You have very fair skin…delicate and impossibly soft. A man’s beard can be quite rough. I would hate to mar you perfect skin in anyway.”

Phyllis certainly had not mentioned that, Penelope thought rather distractedly. “Oh,” she managed. It was hardly the sort of articulate response that would indicate any sort of sparkling wit (or wit of any kind) on her part.

As if to demonstrate his point, he lifted her hand and pressed a kiss against the inside of her wrist, just where her pulse beat there. She could feel the warmth of his lips there, and then the slightest flick of his tongue over her skin. A shiver snaked through her. Had anyone suggested to her that her wrist would be so terribly sensitive, she would have thought them mad. But it seemed as if the heat he created there simply spread, arcing outward from that point of contact to send sparks shooting through her.

“Kissing,” he said, “isn’t simply about my lips touching yours. A kiss can be placed anywhere on another’s body. Your cheek… Your neck…” With each one, he demonstrated. Stepping in close, he pressed a kiss to her cheek and then dipped his head to kiss her neck just above the ruffled edge of her wrapper. “And your ear.” His lips caressed her ear lobe, and gooseflesh raised on her skin. There was a strange fluttering sensation inside her, but not like the nerves she had anticipated. It was something else, something impossibly warm and insistent. She wanted to sink against him, to feel the heat and firmness of his body against hers as she had when they kissed in the breakfast room of her father’s home only the morning prior.

As if he’d read her thoughts, he lifted his lips to hers, capturing them completely as his arms closed about her. Her lashes fluttered as her eyes closed, and she gave herself up to that languid sensation that stole through her whenever they kissed.
